WASHINGTON, DC – Last week, Student Veterans of America and Purdue University’s Military Family Research Institute (MFRI) launched the "Success in 3-D" manual at SVA's inaugural Leadership Institute to empower student veterans to "design, develop, and deliver" sustainable, thriving student veteran organizations.
"The three main lessons of the manual provide student veteran leaders with the information needed to create a business plan and strategy for their chapter,” said Michael Dakduk, SVA’s Executive Director. "Any chapter that implements the lessons of the manual will be poised to make a positive, lasting impact for the student veterans currently on campus and for those that enroll in the future.”
The manual’s supplemental in-person training was the focus this past weekend at the Google campus in Mountain View, CA. SVA Chapter leaders, representing 48 colleges and universities from across the country, toured the Google offices, engaged with veterans from Google’s Vet Network, and attended workshops led by MFRI's staff.
Each workshop taught one lesson from the manual: designing, developing, or delivering a thriving chapter. The attendees then put these lessons into action by drafting mission statements, establishing goals, creating elevator pitches, and laying the groundwork for their chapter’s business plan.
"The SVA 2012 Leadership Institute was an outstanding success,” said Stacie Hitt, Director of Operation Diploma at MFRI. "We came prepared to help participants think about new ways to design, develop and deliver their organizations to their campuses and the wider community. In the end, we learned so much from these smart, talented students and look forward to hearing more from them in the future.”
Based on the success of the Leadership Institute, SVA and MFRI are hosting 6 Leadership Summits across the country this fall to train hundreds of chapter leaders using the Success in 3-D manual. The exact locations and dates will be announced later this summer.
