Becky Patterson served 6 years in the U.S. Navy as a Persian-Farsi Linguist, deploying once to the Persian Gulf in support of the Global War on Terrorism. She returned to Wisconsin upon the completion of her service to attend the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she earned her Bachelor’s in Chemistry. She became involved with the Student Veterans of America (SVA) Chapter on campus, eventually becoming Chapter President, and also worked in the Military and Veterans Resource Center (MAVRC). Through these opportunities she joined Student Government, serving as the first Veteran Advocacy Senator.
Upon graduation, Becky joined SVA National HQ as an AmeriCorps VISTA in the hopes of giving other student veterans a voice at the national organization. Through her year of service, she found a passion at SVA, one which she continued when she was hired as permanent staff in September of 2016. Becky is focused on increasing the diversity and ensuring inclusion in all of the programs and services that SVA provides to their almost 1400 chapters, which serve over 540,000 student veterans nationwide.
In September of 2016 she also began pursuing an MPH in Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Maryland. Through her advocacy work at Student Veterans of America, Becky discovered her zeal for providing a voice for those who are not in a position to adequately speak for themselves. She plans to continue advocating for underrepresented populations while she completes her degree at the University of Maryland.
