Tammy Barlet joined the SVA staff in July of 2017. As a Charlie 2017 Mission Continues Fellow, Tammy will be completing her obligation as a Policy Associate at SVA. Through her fellowship, she intends to gain skills such as how to track and summarize legislative and executive branch proposals and monitor legislative developments within committees. In combination with her graduate studies at George Washington University in health policy, she aspires to be an influential and experienced voice that speaks to change makers of policy and procedures which will increase the quality of life for veterans and their families.
Assistance with college tuition and staying stateside are the two most important reason Tammy enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1995. Although as an Operation Specialist aboard the USCGC Chase (WHEC-718), she would soon find herself in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on her way to either Alaska, Thailand or the Persian Gulf. Vessel Traffic Service Houston/Galveston was her last duty station and where she was awarded the Coast Guard Achievement Medal for an incident which could easily have become a Homeland Security Threat.
It wasn’t until 14 years after Tammy separated from the military; she started pursuing her undergraduate degree from Temple University. While studying at Temple University, Tammy took on the role as Vice-President of the Temple Veterans Association in 2016. She was part of a task force that created a business plan and video, which received the Student Veterans of America/Home Depot grant in 2016. Tammy hopes her legacy left behind at TVA will influence other SVOs to understand the vital connection between the student veteran population and community VSOs.
