Bethany joined Student Veterans of America as a Delta Class fellow with The Mission Continues. Bethany holds a bachelor’s degree in Literature (Pomona College) and master’s degrees in Middle Eastern Studies and in Social Anthropology (Harvard). She is currently an advanced PhD candidate at Harvard University finishing her dissertation research on the impact of the military’s efforts to frame cultural expertise as an essential component of contemporary warfare. As part of her graduate work, Bethany has lived and conducted research in Lebanon, Tunisia, and Syria and has taught broadly in Anthropology, Philosophy, Middle Eastern Studies, and History. Parallel to her graduate study, Bethany worked for five years as a Resident Tutor, a live-in administrative position supporting the academic, social, and personal well-being of undergraduate students at Harvard College. Prior to graduate school, Bethany served for eight years in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve. During this time, Bethany studied Arabic at the Defense Language Institute and deployed once in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (2006-2007). While in the Reserves, she worked as a contact instructor at the U.S. Army Intelligence Center. Bethany was honorably discharged as a SSG in 2011.
