Chapter Voices: University of Alaska Anchorage
Student Veterans of America recognizes the achievements of the chapter at the University of Alaska, Anchorage – Student Veterans of UAA. Founded in 2010, Student Veterans of UAA has achieved much success in the past 6 years, from spikes in membership to improving the lives of not only student veterans at UAA but also those in their surrounding community.
“We have tripled our membership since the founding of our chapter,” Student Veterans of UAA Chapter President, Gary Lytle said. “With this growth, we have been able to raise money as well as bring in food and clothing donations for the homeless veterans in our community.”
Alongside their charitable events and donations, Student Veterans of UAA has also made strides in providing student veterans with mentorship. Another large undertaking that the chapter is currently involved in is providing a Veteran-to-Veteran mentorship program that will begin in the fall of 2016. Their chapter’s work serves an example of how SVA chapters always strive to leave universities and communities better than they found them. The importance of which isn’t lost on Gary Lytle, Student Veterans of UAA Chapter President.
“SVA chapters are great for those current and former military members,” Gary said. “Chapters create an atmosphere in which student veterans are able to offer assistance to one another with class schedules, studying tips, and lessons learned.”
