This January, SVA Chapter Leader David Scott at the University of Memphis will lead a delegation of 10 student veterans to the SVA National Conference in Anaheim, California where they will compete in the National Business Plan Competition. For the University of Memphis Student Veterans Organization (UofMSVO), attending SVA NatCon 2017 will be the culmination of a very busy year.
SVA Chapter Leader David Scott states that the mission of his SVA Chapter, "We provide the tools to empower veterans to pursue their educational and professional goals and increase social mobility through the transformative power of education. We serve as the voice of the veteran population on campus to a faculty and generation that appreciative of military service, but largely unaware of what it entails and the unique challenges of being a non-traditional student." Over the past academic year, UofMSVO has increased their membership by over 300% which has resulted in a 75% increase in attendance at their monthly meetings. UofMSVO attributes this increase in engagement with student veterans on their campus to their efforts to be more involved in their community at large.
UofMSVO now coordinates with local organizations like the American Heart Association and Boy Scouts of America for monthly service projects. They also release a bi-monthly organizational publication called the "Salty Tiger" and host a bi-annual Veterans Town Hall with their University President.

In the next year, UofMSVO hopes to create a Veterans Liaison positions in their Student Government Association and establish and alumni association with a 501c3 status to support future organizational endeavors. The dedication to service and empowerment demonstrated by UofMSVO embodies the values of Student Veterans of America and for that we commend them.
