Hawthrone Official PhotoSpecial Advisor to the Assistant Secretary, Department of Labor 

Mr. Brian Hawthorne has been serving in the US Army Reserves for more than eight years, with two tours in Iraq. He is currently assigned to the 450th Civil Affairs Battalion (Airborne) as a Jumpmaster and Civil Affairs Team Sergeant.

Since coming home from Baghdad in 2008, he has become deeply involved in veterans advocacy and served as SVA’s first Legislative Director. In this capacity, he has testified before Congressional Committees on numerous occasions regarding GI Bill Benefits and the transition from the military to civilian life. For his expertise on the issue, he has been quoted and interviewed by many major news outlets.

Mr. Hawthorne earned his Bachelors Degree in 2010 from The George Washington University, where he co-founded the SVA chapter. Upon graduating, he was given the George Washington Award, which is the University's highest honor, for his work on behalf of the University’s veteran community. He also completed his Masters in Political Management at GW and works for the strategic communications firm Reingold & Associates, focused on veterans and military issues in Alexandria, VA.

As a Board Member and volunteer, Mr. Hawthorne continues to speak about the struggles and successes of student veterans. He also mentors wounded warriors starting college for the first time. For his volunteer work, he was recognized last year with the President's Lifetime Volunteer Achievement Award. He looks forward to working with SVA to foster stronger support systems and to enable all veterans and their families to achieve their academic goals.
