Student Veterans of America’s (SVA) annual national conference is the nation’s largest gathering of post-9/11 veterans who just happen to be awesome students. #NatCon2018 is the premier event and best opportunity to hear from current leaders, develop a professional network, learn ways to improve your SVA Chapter, and to find meaningful employment.
We build the NatCon experience around your needs as a leader and student veteran, which is why #NatCon2018 is shaping up to be the biggest and best NatCon yet. No one brings the diversity of private, non-profit, and government representatives to a conference better than SVA. From former Vice President Biden to Medal of Honor Recipient Kyle White, no one brings critical thought-leaders to a conference like SVA.
#NaCon2018 is January 4 – 6, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas and will be held at the JW Marriot Hill Country Resort and Spa. While we design NatCon around the student veteran, we know the cost to attend is a high barrier to overcome. It’s why we’re offering early registration at $125 through October 27, 2017. Students can even receive a $25 discount if they provide a LinkedIn profile to be added to our professional network. Costs can and do add up if you want more than one SVA Chapter member to attend. To help you, here are three ways to pay for #NatCon before you register.
For many college students SGA is the gatekeeper for accessing student fees to pay for professional development opportunities like NatCon. It’s critical your chapter build a relationship with SGA because they represent your school’s entire student body. Follow our Six-Step guide on how to build a relationship with your SGA so they’ll consider funding your chapter’s participation at #NatCon2018 and more.
You’re going to see SGA Headquarters (HQ) prioritize outreach to SGA to raise awareness about #NatCon2018. We’re distributing a letter from Mr. Jared Lyon, SVA’s President and CEO, to SGA leaders across the country touting the importance of supporting SVA chapters. In his letter, Jared rightly claims that by investing in their local SVA Chapter, SGA officers can better support the student veteran community on campus.
If you’re searching for a fundraising partner or host, you can’t do any better than partnering with your local VFW or American Legion Post. Both have expressed their desire to connect more with student veterans and #NatCon2018 is the perfect opportunity.
Start by getting three of your friends and fellow veterans to attend #NatCon2018. The Lodging Assistance Program will cover the cost of one hotel room for three nights; that’s a savings of nearly $400. To qualify, your SVA Chapter must have at least three SVA Chapter Members registered for #NatCon2018. Each is required to provide individual contact information, LinkedIn profiles, and resumes on one application which will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Resumes will be forwarded to companies like Google and Rockwell Collins for recruitment purposes while we’ll add you and your colleagues to our LinkedIn professional network. All applicants will be notified on the status of their submission within 15 business days and hotel rooms will be booked via an SVA HQ representative and confirmed via email.
If you’re a student veteran attending school in California, then the recommendations above are of paramount importance. California has banned state-funded travel to Texas, which means a public school will not use state funds to pay for you or your Chapter Advisor to attend #NatCon2018. It’s possible your school could use alumni donations or student fees to support your attendance, but that’s up to local school policy.
Don’t wait until it’s too late to register for #NatCon2018. There are even more ways to pay for #NatCon2018 that are just waiting to be discovered and shared with the over 1.1 million student veterans in school. Join our Student Veteran Leadership Forum on Facebook and our group on LinkedIn to be part of the conversation. See you in San Antonio!
