In an effort to better serve more SVA members through the 2017 SVA Leadership Institute Series, SVA we will change how we approach leadership training. This year's SVA Leadership Summits will see the addition of a webinar-based component in addition to a select number of in-person summits to be named later. This modification is an effort to better reach the more than 1.1 million student veterans in school across the country. More details coming soon. Be sure to check here or our Facebook and Twitter pages for when changes occur.
SVA's Local Leadership Summits bring student veterans together to exchange chapter best practices and to explore campus-level concepts that can ease a veteran’s transition from the military to higher education and then to the workforce. These events are hosted in multiple locations throughout the country every summer. Each Summit is hosted with an SVA corporate partner, which gives veterans the opportunity to network and learn from business leaders.
Summits focus on strategic planning and chapter business plan development for chapter leaders. Chapters who attend the Summits will get a 3-day crash course on how to put together a winning chapter business plan, as well as the opportunity to pair with mentors to help craft it. On the last day, chapters will present their plan to a panel of distinguished judges from the local business community who will provide them with expert feedback and advice.
Chapters will leave the Summits prepared and eligible to compete in the National Chapter Business Plan Competition, which continues at the highly-selective Leadership Institute and the National Conference.
There is no fee to attend a Leadership Summit, and we encourage chapters to bring multiple members from their executive board. While SVA will not be offering travel stipends to attend the summits, we will be covering lodging expenses as well as food for attendees.
Thank you for your interest in attending one of our Local Leadership Summits, at this time applications to the 2016 series are closed. Stayed tuned to learn more about the 2017 series!
The Leadership Institute is a cohort-based, multi-day program where SVA brings a select group of emerging chapter leaders together for intensive, in-residence chapter leadership training. The curriculum includes strategic planning, collaborative integration, advanced chapter management techniques, and networking and professional etiquette. SVA will cover the cost of travel, lodging, and meals for all event attendees.
Space in this highly-competitive experience is limited to only the top applicants, in order to build a well-rounded cohort. This is an all-expenses-paid program, which includes airfare, lodging and meals.
Student veteran leaders from any of SVA’s more than 1,300 chapters are eligible to apply. Attendees will be selected based on a number of criteria to ensure that the diversity of SVA’s chapter network is reflected at the event. We will aim to bring student veterans from various types of institutions of higher education, from well-established chapters and newly created ones, from large and small schools, and from various regions of the country.
Throughout the three-day event, SVA will use a combination of traditional presentations and interactive activities to encourage attendees to engage with the training materials. Attendees will have the opportunity to work with other chapter leaders to develop innovative solutions to realistic campus scenarios. Attendees will also have the opportunity to connect with leaders from the Institute's corporate sponsor.
Adviser Training Seminar
While the Leaderships Summits and our Leadership Institute is designed specifically for our students, we know that our chapter advisers play a critical role in ensuring the strength and robustness of our chapters. In order to learn how we can better help our chapter advisers in serving as effective advocates for their chapters, this year we'll be hosting our first ever Adviser Training Seminar. Our inaugural Adviser Training Seminar will take place on Saturday, October 15th, and will be a great opportunity for new, experienced, or even expert chapter advisers learn about the most effective way to empower their chapters back on campus.
There will additionally be an optional welcome reception hosted by SVA for advisers coming in Friday, evening which will serve as an additional opportunity to network with SVA staff, and your fellow chapter advisers from across the country. The training on Saturday will run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with lunch provided. While a detailed agenda will be sent to registered advisers a week before the event, we encourage interested parties to reach out and we'd be happy to answer any questions.
