Darren Phelps joined the professional staff of Student Veterans of America in December of 2013. He currently serves as Vice President of Development, leading the organization's development and technology efforts.
Darren enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in March 2003. Attached to what was then H&S Co. 8th Tank Battalion, he deployed to Djibouti, Africa, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Darren holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University at Buffalo where he majored in Political Science and Psychology, and minored in Philosophy. He holds a Master of Professional Studies degree in Political Management from George Washington University.
Originally from Grand Island NY, Darren has a diverse background having driven revenue growth and managed technology operations of small businesses in the retail, construction, and food service industries. He relocated to Washington, DC in January of 2012 and has held a variety of roles since, having worked in the nonprofit space, on political campaigns and on Capitol Hill. Prior to joining Student Veterans of America, he pursued his graduate studies and while doing so co-founded the Center for Second Service at George Washington University, the first academic center in the nation designed to train veterans to embark upon careers in public service.
With his father having served in the Air Force, and his grandfathers in the Army and Navy, Darren's family is one Coast Guard veteran away from representing all branches of the US Armed Forces.
