9/11 Day of Service
Continue to serve by participating with Student Veterans of America in this year’s 9/11 Day of Service.
Dear SVA Community,
If your chapter is still looking for a way to serve this Patriots Day, SVA wants your help in combatting food insecurity in your community.
According to the USDA, veterans are at higher risk for food insecurity than non-veterans and veterans with disabilities are at even higher risk. At the same time, over half of college students will experience food insecurity at some point in their college careers.
That’s why Student Veterans of America is encouraging its chapters to continue to serve in their communities by easing the problem of hunger. The 9/11 Day of Service campaign offers an opportunity for us to come together on September 11 and 12 to give back.
To participate with SVA, simply go to the Feeding America website and search for one on your campus or in your neighborhood and connect with them on what is needed in your area. If your food bank needs help packing, recruit your entire chapter and others on campus to help! If your food bank needs donations, work with your campus to find a great location to collect non-perishable foods and market your effort around campus, in the community, and on social media!
If your community isn’t listed on Feeding America’s site, reach out to your local VFW or American Legion for service advice. Or, check out the other opportunities on the 9/11 Day website or on the Give Pulse website. There, you can search for volunteer events near or far from your campus location, filtering military and veterans, food insecurity, and dates.
Then, on September 13, let SVA know how you impacted your community! We’ll send out a survey asking how many hours of work, how many pounds of food, how many people and then we’ll let you know the impact you had on the communities that our chapters live in across the United States.
One last thing, make sure you use our hashtags #SVALeads #WeAreSVA #911day and our newest #SVAServes. We would love to see and showcase your awesome pictures of the impact your chapter made for this year’s 9/11 Day of Service.
