Fellows will be flown to Washington, DC to participate in the VFW National Legislative Conference from March 3rd to 7th, 2019, with the opportunity to advocate alongside VFW staff and represent their states. This is an opportunity to share issues facing today's student veterans alongside mentors from the VFW National Legislative Committee. Fellows meet with policy-makers from federal agencies responsible for implementing veterans' policy and reporters covering military and veterans' affairs.

After the VFW National Legislative Conference, fellows will execute their advocacy plan in their home district and submit a comprehensive report on their experience to their VFW state convention, as well as VFW and SVA national offices. A 2014 fellow, Robert Thoen, shared his takeaways from this experience, "It is hard to nail down the biggest benefit of the fellowship. Was it the new friends and allies I made, the lobbying experience, or the new-found appreciation discovered for the VFW? For me, I guess in the end it is a little bit of each."

Expenses covered for the fellowship include airfare, hotel accommodations, local transportation to/from meetings and a per diem allowance. The deadline to apply is October 12, 2018. A formal announcement of the next fellowship class will be at SVA’s National Conference in January.

Spread the word and help student veteran community on your campus and take advantage of this fantastic opportunity to advocate for the needs of their peers. For more information, check out 2 articles highlighting 2018 fellows here and here.

Past fellows earned academic credit for their experience, as well as found internships, accepted additional academic opportunities, and landed jobs as a result of their fellowship experience. Deadline to apply: October 12, 2018.
