Student Veterans of America’s Statement on the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 15, 2026) — Student Veterans of America (SVA) approaches the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act (H.R. 9237 / S. 4744) the way we ask our members to approach their studies, as a complex issue to read closely and weigh honestly. We have read the legislation and discussed it with our members. There are areas worth celebrating and areas we cannot support in their current form.
SVA supports the majority of the 60+ bills included, such as Section 203 which would provide monthly housing allowance parity towards our student veterans who are taking online courses over the summer, Section 205 that would allow veterans to opt-in to digital communications about their VA Educational Benefits, and Section 207 that would allow certified veteran-serving organizations to present during Transition Assistance Program classes. These, among many others, are practical, SVA member-centered gains. We urge their enactment and thank the Members of Congress and their staff for their hard work in developing the proposed legislation.
SVA cannot support Section 201(b), which risks extending GI Bill eligibility beyond the accreditation guardrails that protect our benefit. Further, SVA cannot support the bill’s funding mechanism found in Section 108. Financing today’s progress by reducing access to disability benefits that future veterans will one day need is not an approach we support.
SVA encourages Congress to continue working with veteran service organizations and other stakeholders to develop a path forward that preserves these important reforms while ensuring they are not funded at the expense of the benefits and care earned by disabled veterans. SVA stands ready to support bipartisan efforts that strengthen opportunities for student veterans and military-affiliated students without undermining the promises made to those who have sacrificed the most.
